Earth Day Lesson

Holy crap, it's Earth Day. Also known as that day, several years ago, that Tommy Hilfiger gave me a free tree to plant with a purchase of Tommy Girl Cologne. Yea for Tommy saving the world one teenage girl at a time! Well, I laugh now, but at the time, I eagerly planted my little tree in the backyard, and the next day, my dad mowed over it while cutting the lawn. Damn.

Years at university have put me in touch with sources of knowledge in a way that is usually unique in a lifetime. I have had the full-time opportunity to learn about environmental law and policy, so today, dear reader, I'll be giving back in the form of the written word.

If you go to the Earth Day Network website, they will tell you that they were founded by "the organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970." They neglect to tell you that the first Earth Day was organized by the perpetually underfunded organization, Environmental Action. Environmental Action refused to alter its ideals or ways of operating. Is that a good business model? You tell me; they folded in 1996[1].

In this day and age, non-profit and special interest groups must be business savvy. They may mean to help others, but they are unable to help long-term if they are not sustainable. Major organizations operate within a political framework that forces them to grow and be more professional, or die.

You wonder how that affects you? Well, if you're working on something that you hope to be successful, know that change is as important as persistence and tenacity. That's as simple as allowing your website (or weblog) to grow as you do.

Okay, now, it's Earth Day, folks. Stay in and watch television, or go outside and brave the weather. Whatever you prefer, have a fun day.
