That Darn Cat

I walked into the kitchen the other evening, after work, and smelled the cat's litter box wafting. I shrieked. Mary, who has recently become another roommate of mine, entered the room, and looked at me quizzingly.

Maxim, my kitty"It smells like..." This is where I open my eyes wide and make my hands into little fists. I don't know where I picked up this gesture or why I continue to do it.

Mary simply nods. "Yeah. It smells like cat."

"No, it doesn't." I protest. "It smells like shit."

"This is what cats smell like," she explains.

"Cats smell like shit!"

So, the two girls and I have a little 'roommate meeting' of sorts. Which is really more like me coming home from work, listening to Mary talk about how she has been writing cover letters and faxing her resume all day, and then Jenny walks in and complains about work. I say the cat smells, they agree, and the cat exile starts.

It is very, very hard to properly get rid of a cat in Eugene.

First of all, none of our friends or family want this cat. Then, the humane society here doesn't take cats. Then, this animal shelter does, but they charge a ridiculous price, and we have to pay to have him neutered first. Sigh.
